How to Keep Your Pets Safe in Arizona’s Heat

Arizona summers are no joke. With soaring temperatures often exceeding 100°F, it’s vital to take extra precautions to keep your pets safe from heat-related dangers. At Jaxy Cat Pets, we’ve put together some top safety tips to protect your furry family members during the hottest months.

1. Walk Early or Late: Midday heat can be dangerous—even deadly—for dogs. We recommend walks only in the early morning or late evening. We adjust all walking appointments accordingly to prioritize your pet’s safety.

2. Test the Pavement: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Stick to grass, dirt paths, or shaded areas when possible.

3. Keep Them Hydrated: Always have fresh water available—indoors and outdoors. On long walks, we bring portable water for your pet to sip mid-visit.

4. Provide Shade and Ventilation: Outdoor pets need plenty of shade and ventilation. Never rely on a fan alone—pets cool differently than humans. Inside, ensure your AC is functioning properly.

5. Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car: Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can rise over 120°F in minutes. It’s illegal in Arizona and extremely dangerous.

6. Watch for Signs of Overheating: Excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, or lethargy can be signs of heatstroke. Move your pet to a cool area immediately and call your vet.
